The Flumps

The adventures in the Flump household with Grandfather Flump and his flumpet (a type of trumpet), Father Flump digging in the allotment, Mrs Flump in the kitchen, and the three children Perkin, Posie and Pootle. The focus was generally on Pootle, the baby flump (and also the cutest), as he got into all sorts of mischeif just growing up and learning just what life is all about.

Small ball shaped, fluffy puppets filmed in stop motion, looking a little like furry Mr Potato Heads, it was first shown in 1976 and consisted of only 13 episodes.

The episode I remember most is "Secrets", Posie wanders around asking various members of the Flump family what they are upto, they tell her but ask her to "Keep it under her hat.". Posie is a little confused with all these secrets and hats. When Pootle is busy with his carpentry set and he asks her to keep a secret, Posie agrees to keep it under her hat but Pootle reminds her that she is not wearing a hat. So, Posie, worried that the secrets may get lost, sets off to find a hat.

Admittedly the stories are not epic, but they are aimed at very junior viewers, and I have very fond memories indeed. Particularly of the wonderful "Can you Keep a Secret" Song.

The usual ending of an episode was Grandfather usually found sitting in the comfy chair reading his paper or sleeping under it, would wake up for tea, especially if Mother Flump had been baking.

The Flumps, a story of a typical loving family of fur balls and their day to day lives.
